Shadows of the Mind edition by Mark Alders Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I'm quickly coming to realize that Mark Alders has quite the imagination, I never know what's going to happen next or what crazy concept will be thrown at me! And frankly, that's a very welcome breath of fresh air! His characters always seem to grab me, make me love them, and want to hear their story.

While Jacob and Callum fell for each other fast and hard, their relationship still felt very genuine and natural. Their horniness at inappropriate times had me laughing, as Suzy says "Boys"!! Their love and tenderness with each other was very sweet, I look forward to seeing them progress. I'm equally intrigued by the secondary characters, Zane, Suzy, and Mr. Barnaby, I wonder what kind of mess they will get into next...
This book was a lot of fun. It's action-packed and at the same time weird and entertaining as a sci-fi b-movie (Creature of the Black Lagoon comes immediately to my mind).

The best thing of the book is its narrator, Jacob. He is, like he often says, the only 18 years old gay in his town, Pembroke Eve. The author is very effective in writing this 18 year old boy. He seems naive sometimes and too excited, but he is always enthusiast, like you'd expect from someone his age. My kudos to the author for being able to write such a fresh, spontaneous and frank voice.

The cast of characters is interesting and varied. Callum, Jacob's boyfriend, is the most endearing of the lot, because he is insecure and caring. Their meeting is very sex-driven at the beginning, but their relationship becomes deeper as the story evolves. The way they find comfort in each other is very sweet. It's up to them, the underdogs, those regarded as losers, to save the town, and they never forget for an instant where they come from, that's why you can't help loving them by the end.

I must admit I am not such a big fan of sci-fi books, but I liked reading the story and I couldn't put it down. It's a bit confusing in places (especially the part where Mr. Barnaby & Co were tuning the field generator) and there were some misspellings, but I'm going to read the sequel, because the characters were great.
Eighteen-year-old Jacob Thieson is happy enough in his small town. He might be gay, but he has come to the realization that he's really not that much different than anyone else in Pembroke Eve. He likes the familiarity and routine of life in the small seaside community; nothing out of the ordinary happens there, and there are no surprises. Or so he thinks until the night that a spaceship sets down in a farmer's field, complete with glowing green mist, alien creatures, and a nasty agenda.

Now the citizens of quiet Pembroke Eve are under attack. All except Jacob, who seems to be impervious to the aliens' attempts to control his body and mind, and who manages to save a few others from the terrible harvesting that is going on within the spaceship. Now it's up to Jacob and a few other hardy individuals to remain alive, defeat the aliens, and save the entire town.

Life is certainly no longer routine and predictable. In fact, it's positively dangerous these days. But when this is all over, the once-lovelorn Jacob might just get a boyfriend out of this experience. Provided that he and Callum remain alive, of course.

In his novel "Shadows of the Mind," Mark Alders gives readers a tale of alien abduction and adventure in a small Australian tourist town. I'm not exactly sure what drew me to pick this story up - the colorful cover, perhaps? - because science fiction is not my genre of choice. I'm glad that I did, though. This novel is fast-paced and fun, and I found myself quite enjoying the ride.

The town of Pembroke Eve is filled with people who can only be called "characters," and Mr. Alders has done an admirable job of bringing them to life. Jacob, who is our narrator as well as our young hero, is a good-natured fellow with an amiable voice, and it's impossible not to like him. He has sex on the brain, which seems about right for a young man his age, but that only makes him more appealing and real to the reader.

The aliens feel like they come straight from an old horror flick, if perhaps a touch more sophisticated. Waving tentacles, multiple eyes, slimy green skin, vaguely squid-like bodies, and a disconcerting ability to turn to mist when it suits them give them high points for "ick" factor. And their purpose for kidnapping and "farming" the town's residents is positively bilious (and I'm not entirely sure if a pun was intended there).

"Shadows of the Mind" contains strong undercurrents of humor interspersed with tragedy. The contrast between the two is a little jarring, but it is the tragedy that brings the young people together and gives each character depth. Due to the fact that most of the townsfolk are captured by the aliens, there is a lot of nudity in this story, and Jacob's wry comment on how enlightening and yet frightening it is to see people without their clothes on is pretty hilarious. The Suzy/Zane romantic subplot adds a comic touch as well and reminds us of just how youthful the main characters in this story actually are.

Overall, I have to say that the plot is fun and pretty well put together. We never find out why Jacob is immune to the alien holding field, but we do see that Jacob he is indeed different from the other folks in town as much as he insists otherwise. And the story ends with a humorous note, sending everything back to normal in the town. Or what passes for normal in Pembroke Eve, anyway.

"Shadows of the Mind" is subtitled "The Pembroke Eve Chronicles Book 1," which leads me to the obvious conclusion that Mr. Alders plans to set more stories in his fictitious town. I certainly hope so. I would enjoy a chance to visit with some of the other colorful residents of Pembroke Eve and to find out what makes them tick...and see what wacky direction their lives are going to head next.
Great story. Really got into the book. Loved the characters. The story was fast paced and you really get into the story. Could not put the book down. Finished the book in one sitting. Just down loaded the second book.
